Our History

Over the past 60 years, Bobbitt Design Build has built its reputation as the Carolinas’ largest general contractor specializing in the design-build process. This reputation is built on a legacy of excellence that dates back to the post-War building boom of the 1940s.

G.E. Bobbitt started his Raleigh-based construction company in 1946 and became one of the initial franchise distributors for Butler Manufacturing Company.

Long before design-build became an industry-wide buzzword, G.E. Bobbitt & Associates was coordinating and managing all the services associated with successful building projects – from site selection to civil engineering, architectural design to navigating the municipal planning and approval process, all the way through to the end-product construction – all under the same roof, from the same source.

Sounds a lot like today’s interpretation of design-build, doesn’t it? Our founder passed away in 1975, but not before laying the groundwork for Bobbitt to become a stalwart commercial contractor throughout the Carolinas.

In the 1980s, the Bobbitt organization created an employee stock ownership plan for employees to share in the company’s overall success by owning a portion of the company. Bobbitt became 100 percent employee-owned in 2000.

In recent years, Bobbitt twice received a Triangle Business Journal Fast 50 Award, which recognizes the area’s fastest-growing companies. Similarly, we’ve won numerous EDGE Awards for Best Design-Build Project as well as for Environmental Stewardship. Combined with our Sir Walter Raleigh Awards from the city for commercial building appearance, these honors acknowledge the Bobbitt commitment to green building.

The industry acknowledgements don’t stop with just awards, as Bobbitt has been featured in FORTUNE, Commercial Real Estate Today, and Metal Construction News, among others. We remain among the country’s premiere Butler Builders.

Growing demand across our region has led to expansion into Columbia, South Carolina, in 2000.
