From the CEO
We opened our Columbia office on May 1, 2000. Adding the South Carolina branch to the Bobbitt family tree represented a successful strategic move for us. Historically we had worked many different end-use markets in the Triangle area but had not operated in another geographic region. Our focus in both Columbia and Raleigh has been in the private, negotiated, non-residential market.
This year we will embark on another strategic growth opportunity by increasing our focus on governmental markets. We will work to develop three broad governmental markets:
- Public Design Build
- National Joint Powers Alliance/GSA Schedule
Public design build has new opportunities based on state law changes and the willingness of public buyers to purchase design and construction services in new ways. We have already made inroads in this market with the City of Durham Fire Station and the Town of Hardeeville multiple public projects.
National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA) and the GSA Schedule are both programs available to us through Butler Manufacturing. These programs allow public (federal, state and local) entities to buy construction from a published schedule without going through additional bidding.
We are exploring military work through a joint venture with an 8-A Hub Zone firm. The JV will pursue set-aside projects at Fort Bragg, and we will explore other federal opportunities as well.
Diversification into government work will be measured and incremental. It is not meant to replace our core negotiated private work, but be an “add to” our future business. I will lead the government sales effort, while Ben Wilson, Jim Bell, and Josh Menold will continue to manage and direct our existing business. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or questions about the governmental market program.
