Oldest Continually Operating Day Care in N.C. Selects Bobbitt to Design, Build New Facility

RALEIGH, N.C. – Bobbitt Design Build has been selected by Grey Stone Baptist Church to build its new two-story, 30,000 square-foot Legacy Center addition. The project is located on a 6.3-acre site on Hillsborough Road in Durham, N.C.

Grey Stone Baptist Church was established in West Durham in 1894 and has been a beacon at the current location since 1935. The day care ministry, known as the Grey Stone Christian Learning Center, is the oldest continually operating day care in North Carolina, serving families since 1943.

Church leaders selected Bobbitt for its design-build experience with numerous religious and day care projects.

“We worked closely with church representatives to develop a master plan and then obtain street closing and special use permits,” said Brian Van Horn, project developer for Bobbitt Design Build. “We carefully designed the site and building to connect the new structure to the existing, as well as provide high-quality expanded space for the church’s growing day care and children’s ministries.”

The Legacy Center, with a capacity to serve 140 children, will be the new home for the existing day care ministry, church preschool, elementary and special needs children’s ministries. Grey Stone is known for its “Duke” stone architecture, which the new facility will feature to complement the existing church building. Significant site work involves rerouting sanitary sewer and stormwater around the new building site. Anticipated completion of the project is February 2013.
